Media Relations and Web Communication Records, 1900-2010 (25 Boxes)

About Media Relations and Web Communication

The current department of media relations (ca. 2010) at Norwich University is administered by a media relations manager who reports to the vice president for enrollment management and communications.  Many materials in the collection date from an earlier period when the department was still known as the Public Relations Office.

About the Collection

The media relations records in the collection consist primarily of news clippings and press releases.  There are also files and promotional materials documenting various public relations-oriented events as well as newsletters issued by the department. Clippings date from 1900-2007.  Press releases date from 1959-2007.  Vermont College in the period from 1971-2000 is also represented in the collection. A more complete content listing of materials in the collection can be found below.

The web communication records, 2008-2010, consist of archival DVDs on which the Norwich University website is captured and preserved.

This file is part of a record series of biographical files of alumni, faculty and staff created and/or accrued by various individuals including alumni affairs and development staff members, archives staff and former university historian, William Arba Ellis. George Christie Walker, Jr., was a member of the Norwich University class of 1949. During World War II, he served with the 93rd Bombardment Group and the 445th Bombardment Group of the 8th Air Force. This file contains additional information about George Walker’s military service in the form of a survey he completed for the Sullivan Museum and History Center in 2010 in preparation for their The Role of Remembrance: Norwich University and WWII exhibit, which ran from October 2010 to January 2011.

Leon Francis Walker originally entered Norwich University as a member of the class of 1920. Collection on Thomas Woodruff Walker, 1910-1911 (1 File)

About Thomas Woodruff Walker, President of Norwich University, 1867-1868

Thomas Walker was born in New Albany, IN, and died in South Wilton, CT. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1856. He served with the 3rd U.S. Infantry in New Mexico and Texas. Walker served during the Civil War in a variety of positions. He was elected president of Norwich University on 4 March 1867 but, due to ill health, was forced to resign in April of 1868. Following his tenure as president of Norwich, Thomas Walker moved to New Jersey and practiced law. At the time of his death in 1890, Walker left a wife and a daughter. The collection contains more biographical information on Thomas W. Walker.

About the Collection

The collection consists solely of miscellaneous biographical information on Thomas Walker, most of which was compiled by William Arba Ellis in preparation for his published history of Norwich University, 1819-1911.

Edward Hazen Walton Scrapbook, 1913-1917 (1 Volume)

Edward H. Walton, class of 1917 About Edward H. Walton

Edward Hazen Walton of Wakefield, MA, pursued a civil engineering course while at Norwich University. He served on a number of committees, including hop, junior week, and commencement week. He was the recipient of the Shuttleworth sabre, the Reeves medal, the military medal and the Cowlishaw trophy. Walton also served as class treasurer and as a military editor of the War Whoop. He was a member of Phi Kappa Delta. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Edward H. Walton.

About the Collection

The collection consists of Edward H. Walton’s Norwich University scrapbook or “memory book” of photographs and Norwich memorabilia. Topics of interest within the scrapbook include Norwich social events and summer camp at Fort Ethan Allen in 1914.

About the collection

This file is part of a record series of biographical files of alumni, faculty and staff created and/or accrued by various individuals including alumni affairs and development staff members, archives staff and former university historian, William Arba Ellis. Virgil E. Wardwell was a member of the Norwich University class of 1942. He did not graduate with his class.  Virgil E. Wardwell served in the Pacific theater in World War II and died on 15 June 1944 on Saipan. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously. The file contains more information on Virgil Wardwell’s WWII service and decorations.

 Martin Wasserman Scrapbook, 1951-1955 (1 Box)

About Martin Wasserman

Martin Wasserman, a native of Bronx, NY, graduated as an economics major in the Norwich University class of 1955. He was a star member of Norwich University’s football and basketball teams for several years.  Martin Wasserman also served on the staffs of the War Whoop and Guidon. The control file included with the collection contains additional information on Martin Wassrman’s activities while attending Norwich.

About the Collection

The collection consists of a scrapbook of programs, clippings and newspaper articles pertaining primarily to football at Norwich University.  Basketball and other sports at Norwich from 1951-1954 are also represented.  Additionally, there is a booklet commemorating Exercise Sage Brush at Fort Polk, Louisiana, 1955.
