About the U.S. Weather Bureau, Northfield Station

Northfield, Vermont hosted an official U.S. weather service recording station from 1887 to 1966. The U.S. Signal Corps was responsible for observations from 1887-1891, the U.S. Weather Bureau from 1891-1943, and Norwich University from 1943 to 1966. The building now known as Ainsworth Hall was built in 1910 to house the weather station.  In 1948, care of the building was turned over to Norwich University on the condition that the school continue to record weather observations for at least ten years.  The building was used for faculty housing for three years before becoming the University’s administrative headquarters after remodeling in 1951.  By 1955, however, administrative offices moved to Dewey Hall and the building was used to house the infirmary.  The original Ainsworth Infirmary, built in 1915, had been recently demolished to make room for construction of Harmon Hall. The former weather bureau building was expanded to include additional space and facilities to aid in its new function as an infirmary and was renamed Ainsworth Infirmary.  It was not until 1966, however, that Norwich gave up its weather observation responsibilities and the building officially became a part of the university. This collection contains no observer records prior to Norwich’s assumption of weather-recording responsibilities in 1943.

The University Regulator, 1853-1855 (1 file)

Image of the University Regulator About the Collection

The University Regulator was likely the first newspaper published by Norwich cadets. From 1853 to 1855, a student group calling themselves the “University Regulators” put out this newspaper, which addressed the conduct of NU faculty and students as one of the chief concerns of its student editors. The paper’s motto, appearing on every issue, was “justice to whom justice is due.” The University Archives has only six surviving issues of this paper dating from 1853-1855. According to former university historian, William Arba Ellis, however, the paper originally continued into 1856. The University Owl, another student newspaper appearing in the 1850s, may have been published in response to the Regulator.
