About the Collection

This collection consists of files of ephemera, predominantly commencement programs and residency and program guides produced by the College of Graduate and Continuing Studies (CGCS) of Norwich University (previously the School of Graduate and Continuing Studies).  The ephemera in this collection is primarily promotional literature and schedules for residencies, 2006-2011. Commencement programs, 2003 and 2006-2012, are also included in the collection. This collection is open to new accessions and ephemera is added to the collection on an ongoing basis.

This collection consists of issues of a newsletter known as Saber Cuts, which was published by the military department at Norwich University for the purposes of keeping alumni informed about activities of a military nature. This newsletter was “issued every once-in-a-while” from 1922-1923. Topics frequently addressed include polo, fencing, rifle, and horsemanship.  Less frequent articles about the faculty, the curriculum and other athletic teams and events were also included.

Harry Bennett Salman Papers, 1911-1959 (1 Box)

Originally from St. Johnsbury, VT, Harry B. Salman graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1915, and entered Norwich University in 1916. That same year, he joined the Near East Relief Expedition as part of the Students Army Training Corps and served in Turkey and Armenia. Upon his return, he re-enrolled in Norwich in 1920 and graduated with the class of 1921. Salman played varsity baseball, basketball and football. He was a member of the chemistry and political science clubs and the Alpha Sigma Pi fraternity. Beginning in 1934, Harry Salman was in the insurance business in Northfield, VT. He was elected to the Vermont legislature in 1958. Harry Salman married Mildred Wood Denny (b. 1897) in 1923. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Harry B. Salman.

About the Collection

The collection contains papers relating to Harry Salman’s time at St. Johnsbury Academy, 1911-1915. Also included are papers and ephemera relating to his time at Norwich University, 1918-1922, and as a member of Alpha Sigma Pi fraternity, 1918. There are account books and a file of photographs related to Salman’s association with Owl’s Head Camp for Boys (probably in or near Newport, VT) on Lake Memphremagog, 1924-1931. Other photographs record Norwich University buildings, students and staff from Salman’s time as a Norwich student, and miscellaneous views of friends and family. Most photographs in the collection are unidentified and undated.  Miscellaneous papers, 1913-1959, document associations with Norwich, his time overseas and the Vermont National Guard. George Max Sanborn Photographs, 1920-1949 (1 Box)

Freshman-Sophomore Rope Pull, 1931 About George M. Sanborn

George “Max” Sanborn was a member of the class of 1913, although he attended Norwich University for only about a year. While at Norwich, he pursued a course in civil engineering. Sanborn Drugstore of Northfield, VT, was his family’s business from 1898 until 1954, when Max Sanborn moved to Florida. Max Sanborn was an avid photographer. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on George Max Sanborn.

About the Collection

The collection includes contact sheets and negatives containing shots of the Norwich University campus and buildings and the greater Northfield community. Many are undated. A basic index to the images on the contact sheets is included with the collection. A 2005 calendar featuring historic photographs of George “Max” Sanborn is also in the collection.

This file is part of a record series of biographical files of alumni, faculty and staff created and/or accrued by various individuals including alumni affairs and development staff members, archives staff and former university historian, William Arba Ellis. Edward Scheipers was a member of the Norwich University class of 1950. He served in World War II with the 100th Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force, prior to attending Norwich. This file contains more information on Edward Scheipers’ military service in the form of a survey about alumni WWII experiences that he completed in 2010. This survey was conducted by the Sullivan Museum and History Center in preparation for their The Role of Remembrance: Norwich University and WWII exhibit, which ran from October 2010 to January 2011.

This file is part of a record series of biographical files of alumni, faculty and staff created and/or accrued by various individuals including alumni affairs and development staff members, archives staff and former university historian, William Arba Ellis. Robert W. Schiller was a member of the Norwich University class of 1930. During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater. This file contains additional information about Bob Schiller’s military service and lifelong association with Norwich University, including a military service record survey, photographs and ephemera acquired by Schiller during WWII, and correspondence between Schiller and various Norwich staff members.
