The University Owl, 1854, 1856 (1 file)

©2011 Norwich University Archives

Image of the University Owl About the Collection

The University Owl was a student newspaper published in 1854 and 1856. The University Archives has only two issues of this paper and, as far as is known, these were the only issues published. The first issue is dated November 1854 while the other dates from December 1856. The 1856 issue includes comments that indicate the publication was coming back from a hiatus. This short (4 page) newspaper included editorials, poetry, parody and other literary features, most notably a “University Roll” with messages addressed to different cadets. There is some evidence that The University Owl was a rival to The University Regulator, which was another student newspaper of the 1850s. The first issue of The University Owl included the admission that “we are decidedly not Regulators” in a statement of purpose.
