Gustaf A. Nelson Scrapbook, 1915-1924 (2 Boxes)

Gustaf A. Nelson, class of 1924, in 1918 About Gustaf A. Nelson

Gustaf “Gus” Nelson of Northfield, VT, received a B. A. degree from Norwich University. He was originally from Indian Orchard, MA. Gus Nelson entered Norwich in September 1915 as a member of the class of 1919, but his education was interrupted by World War I. He returned to Norwich after the war and graduated with the class of 1924. Gus Nelson enlisted in the Vermont infantry with the 102nd Machine Gun Battalion of the Yankee Division on 8 April 1917; he was discharged from active duty as a first lieutenant, 15 August 1919. While at Norwich, he was class president (class of 1924) and a member of the glee club. He also served on the staffs of the War Whoop, the Guidon and the Reveille. He played football and was a member of the Alpha Sigma Pi fraternity. Gus Nelson organized the Friends of the Norwich University Library in 1967. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Gus Nelson.

About the Collection

The collection consists of Gustaf A. Nelson’s Norwich University scrapbook or “memory book,” of photographs and Norwich memorabilia. Topics of interest within the scrapbook include athletics, a football injury he sustained on 13 September 1915, World War I, First Squadron of the First Vermont Cavalry, the Mexican border crisis of 1916, a recruiting station for the 1st Vermont Infantry in Bennington, VT, correspondence with friends, and Norwich social events. Also available with the collection is Gus Nelson’s correspondence, 1949-1975 and World War I papers, 1918-1919 (in Box 2). Photographs of the Friends of the Library and other Norwich groups, ca. 1970s are also included as well as Nelson’s 1924 B. A. degree from Norwich (OSD2.3).

About the collection

This file is part of a record series of biographical files of alumni, faculty and staff created and/or accrued by various individuals including alumni affairs and development staff members, archives staff and former university historian, William Arba Ellis. John L. Nelson was a member of the Norwich University class of 1945. During World War II, he served with the Army Air corps in the China Burma India Theater (CBI). This file contains more information about John L. Nelson’s military service in the form of a survey he completed about his WWII experiences in 2010. This survey was conducted by the Sullivan Museum and History Center in preparation for their The Role of Remembrance: Norwich University and WWII exhibit, which ran from October 2010 to January 2011.

Benjamin C. Newton Scrapbook, 1917 (1 Volume)

About Benjamin C. Newton

Benjamin Newton (1897-1983) of Salamanca, NY, attended Norwich University in 1917. He left Norwich in January of 1918 and did not graduate with his class. Benjamin Newton worked for the U.S. Border Patrol and the U.S. Treasury Department. He operated a farm in Salamanca, NY, from 1936 to 1971. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Benjamin C. Newton.

About the Collection

The collection consists of Benjamin C. Newton’s Norwich University scrapbook or “memory book.” The scrapbook contains only autographs Newton collected from his classmates, football scores, and a few pieces of Norwich ephemera. Regional advertisements are also featured in Newton’s scrapbook.

Denton Nichols Photographs, 1951-1955 (1 File)

About Denton Nichols

Denton Emerson Nichols entered Norwich University as a member of the class of 1955 from New Bedford, Massachusetts.  He graduated as a civil engineering major and went on the serve in the Corps of Engineers from September 1955 to 1957.  Between 1957 and 1960, he was employed by the Stone and Webster Engineering corporation as a field engineer on the Yankee Atomic Electric Plant in Rowe, Massachusetts.  Later, he also worked for New England Electric System.  As a Norwich student, Nichols was a member of the Varsity Club, A.S.C. E., and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. The control file included with the collection contains additional information on Denton Nichols.

About the Collection

The collection consists of color slides of Norwich University events during Denton Nichols’ attendance, ca. 1951-1955.  Subjects include placement and unveiling of the Alden Partridge statue in 1955, junior week floats, Harmon Hall construction, skiing and landscapes of the Norwich University campus in winter.

Collection on George Nichols, 1847-1849, 1887-1912 (4 Files)

George Nichols About George Nichols, Acting President of Norwich University, 1885-1895

George Nichols was born and died in Northfield, VT. He graduated from Vermont Medical College in Woodstock in 1857. He served as surgeon with the 13th Vermont volunteer infantry regiment during the Civil War. Nichols also served as Vermont Secretary of State from 1865 to 1884 and as Vermont State Librarian from 1848-1853. He was elected president of the Northfield National Bank in 1875. George Nichols served as Norwich University trustee from 1866 to 1907, treasurer from 1866 to 1875, and as acting president from 1885 to 1895. He was elected vice president of Norwich on 25 March 1885 and resigned in June 1895. He married Ellen Maria Blake (d. 1906) in 1852 and the couple had two children, both of whom died in infancy. The collection includes further biographical information on George Nichols.

About the Collection

The collection consists primarily of biographical information on George Nichols, including the correspondence, 1911-1912, of William Arba Ellis as he prepared his sketch of Nichols for publication. Drafts of this sketch can also be found in the collection. Also included is some miscellaneous correspondence of Nichols and the Norwich board of trustees, 1887-1896, and a photograph of George Nichols. There is a record book from the Washington County Teachers Association, 1847-1949, of which Nichols was Secretary. The record book contains the Association’s constitution, meeting minutes and roster of members. Among the topics under discussion was the need for Vermont to form “teachers’ institutes” to train its common school teachers.

Rupert Alfred Nock Scrapbook, 1924-1927 (1 Volume)

About Rupert A. Nock

Rupert Nock of Newburyport, MA, entered Norwich University in 1924 and remained until 1927 but did not graduate. While at Norwich, he played football and was a member of the Phi Kappa Delta fraternity. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II. Nock later graduated from Brown University and was superintendent of schools in Newburyport from 1946 until his retirement in 1970.  He married Ruth Bingham and the couple had two sons. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Rupert Alfred Nock.

About the Collection

The collection consists of Rupert A. Nock’s Norwich University scrapbook, which contains photographs and other Norwich memorabilia from Nock’s time as a student. Topics of interest within the scrapbook include the Norwich University campus and buildings, Phi Kappa Delta fraternity, football, the Dewey Hall fire on 24 October 1925, and a trip Nock took to the south in the summer of 1924.

John C. Novak was a member of the Norwich University class of 1939. This file contains additional information about John C. Novak, including copies of certificates (honorable discharge and American Legion) and brief notes he made recording some personal observations in the years immediately preceding the entrance of the U.S. into WWII. These materials were solicited in preparation for an exhibit, The Role of Remembrance: Norwich University and WWII, at the Sullivan Museum and History Center.

About the Collection

The NU Connection was a newsletter of Computer Services (Information Technology) first published in August 1988. Archives holdings include only one copy of the first issue and it is unclear whether publication continued after 1988. According to the first issue, the NU Connection was intended “to provide a two-way forum of issues and answers related to computing and telecommunications on both the MCV and VC campuses” of Norwich University.
