The Magnum was a student literary publication produced at Norwich University beginning in 1951. Publication stopped two years later in 1953. Benjamin H. Reid, Norwich University class of 1953, was the founding editor of this magazine. The Magnum included student creative writing and was also illustrated with caricatures and other drawings. The collection includes several copies of a December 1951 issue (Vol. 1), one copy of an issue from Winter 1952 (Vol. 1) and two copies from Spring 1953 (Vol. 2) only. There is additional evidence that an issue may also have been published in Fall 1952 although no copy was retained.

Nicholas W. Mansolillo Technical Manuals, 1985 (3 files)

About Nicholas W. Mansolillo

Originally from Cranston, RI, Nicholas Mansolillo was a member of the Arnold Air Society, the Maroon Key club, and Alpha Kappa Psi during his time at Norwich University. He also served on the honor committee and as class treasurer. Following his graduation from Norwich with the class of 1983, Nicholas Mansolillo served as a missile combat crew commander at the Minuteman II missile silos at Ellsworth Air Force Base outside of Rapid City, SD, from 1984-1988. As Mansolillo reports, “Minuteman II missiles were part of history ending ‘the Cold War era’.” He also served in Desert Storm from 1991 to 1992. Mansolillo was with the 3rd Army out of Atlanta, GA, when he was assigned to the 22nd Supply Command in Arcentcom as an acquisition/contracting officer stationed in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He wrote, “We wore many hats as the contracting officers responsible for ice/water, flatbed trucks, heavy equipment movement, etc. I had to make sure roads were passable/clear to travel from mines, damaged or blown-up vehicles, trash/debris, etc., so my trucks could get supplies to the troops and coalition forces.” Nicholas Mansolillo now (2010) lives in Arlington, VA.

About the Collection

The collection consists of two technical manuals pertaining to weapon system operations and procedures used by Nicholas Mansolillo as a missile combat crew commander at the Minuteman II missile silos, Ellsworth Air Force Base, 1984-1988. The control file included with the collection contains additional information on the manuals and their use.

The collection consists of records documenting departmental proceedings of the mathematics department during the period 1967-1976. The departmental proceedings also include abstracts of student papers by senior math majors for the classes of 1968 to 1973.

Richard J. McCormick Scrapbook, 1924-1928 (1 Volume)

About Richard J. McCormick

Richard McCormick of Pittsford, VT, participated in polo and track while attending Norwich University. He was a pistol marksman, swordsman and a recipient of the Shuttleworth sabre. He served as treasurer of the Rutland club and was a member of the senior electric society and of the Iota Pi Kappa fraternity. Richard McCormick died in 1971. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Richard J. McCormick.

About the Collection

The collection consists of Richard McCormick’s Norwich University scrapbook or “memory book.” Topics of interest within the scrapbook include the flood of 1927, the Dewey Hall fire on 24 October 1925, football, including articles about “midget” football star, Walter Kane, and a news clipping about the role played by Norwich cadets in the search for eleven-year-old, Lucille Chatterton, and her kidnapper, Earl Woodward, in 1925.

About the collection

This file is part of a record series of biographical files of alumni, faculty and staff created and/or accrued by various individuals including alumni affairs and development staff members, archives staff and former university historian, William Arba Ellis. Guy L. McGowan was a member of the Norwich University class of 1942. During World War II, he served with the 832nd Amphibious Truck Company and took part in the invasion of southern France. This file contains more information about Guy McGowan’s military service in the form of a survey he completed about his WWII experiences in 2010. This survey was conducted by the Sullivan Museum and History Center in preparation for their The Role of Remembrance: Norwich University and WWII exhibit, which ran from October 2010 to January 2011.

John W. McHugo attended Norwich University from 1941 to 1943 as a member of the class of 1945. He served in both World War II and Korea.  During WWII, he was an escort pilot in the 506th Fighter Group, 7th Fighter Command in the Pacific Theater.  This file contains additional information about John W. McHugo, including a survey he completed for the Sullivan Museum and History Center in 2010 as well as copies of photographs and other materials documenting his WWII experiences.

This file is part of a record series of biographical files of alumni, faculty and staff created and/or accrued by various individuals including alumni affairs and development staff members, archives staff and former university historian, William Arba Ellis. Myers “Luke” McWilliams was a member of the Norwich University class of 1946. He served in the Pacific theater in World War II and was at one point stationed at the Naval Air Station, Barbers Point, Oahu, Hawaii. This file contains more information about Luke McWilliams’ military service in the form of reminisces about a training exercise in which he and his friend, Paul Newman, participated. This exercise was designed to simulate the rescue of downed airmen in Japanese waters.
