Frederick W. Lander Alumni File, 1858-2002 (1 File)

About the collection

This file is part of a record series of biographical files of alumni, faculty and staff created and/or accrued by various individuals including alumni affairs and development staff members, archives staff and former university historian, William Arba Ellis. Frederick W. Lander of Salem, Massachusetts, was a member of the Norwich University class of 1841. He was employed as a civil engineer by the U.S. government and made multiple transcontinental trips to determine a possible railroad route. He also surveyed and constructed the great overland wagon route. He was a brigadier general of volunteers during the Civil War. Early in the war, he served on secret missions as a volunteer aide de camp on General McClellan’s staff. After his promotion to brigadier general, he served on General Morris’ staff and was assigned later to command a brigade in Charles Stone’s division. Later, he was given the task of protecting the upper Potomac River. He died on March 2, 1862. This file consists of biographical information on Frederick Lander, including copies of early reports made by Lander, notes and correspondence of William Arba Ellis regarding Lander, and more recent articles and research. Information about paintings by artist, Albert Bierstadt, who joined Lander during the construction of the overland wagon route, is also included.

Earle Field Lane Photographs, ca. 1930s (6 Files)

About Earle Field Lane

Earle Field Lane, originally of Barre, VT, first entered Norwich University as an S.A.T.C. student in 1918. He pursued the general course of study offered, eventually finishing in 1923. While at Norwich, Lane played the saxophone and was a member of the band.  Earle Lane married Dorothy May Hubbard on 17 June 1926 in Northfield, VT, where their family continued to reside. During World War II, Lane served as a major in the Army Air Forces. He was also employed for much of his career as an engineer for the Vermont Highway Department. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Earle Lane.

About the Collection

The collection consists of photographs documenting activities on the Norwich University campus during the 1930s. As a Norwich alumnus living in town, Earle Lane photographed sports, parades and other Norwich events in the years after his graduation. Subjects represented in the collection include football, horsemanship, parades, skiing, and snow sculpture (many associated with different fraternity houses in town).

Ralph Oakes Lanoue Photographs, 1923-1925 (4 Files)

About Ralph Oakes Lanoue

Ralph Oakes Lanoue from Boston entered Norwich University to study civil engineering in 1923. He was a member of the class of 1927, although he did not graduate with his class. Ralph Lanoue’s career included positions at Lock, Inc.,  General Electric and Lapp Insulator Company. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Ralph Lanoue.

About the Collection

The collection consists of photographs documenting activities on the Norwich University campus during the period from 1923 to 1925. Subjects represented in the photographs include the physical campus (buildings and upper parade ground), several of Lanoue’s fellow students, encampments, the mounted band, and Lanoue’s room in the barracks. Photographs of other students include: Oliva Arsenault (NU 1927), Ralph Bancroft (NU 1926), Albert Dodge (NU 1927), Leston Faneuf (NU 1927), Bill Hoggan (NU 1926), Gordon Hamon (NU 1928), Robert L. Hoss (NU 1925), Warren Sweetser (NU 1927), and Edward Watkins (NU 1927).

George Arthur Lansell Photographs, 1925-1965 (1 Box)

About George Arthur Lansell

George A. Lansell was born in England in 1886 and came to Vermont in 1910. He worked for Norwich University as a custodian and grounds keeper from 1925 until his retirement in the mid-1960s. His wife Edith worked at the Ainsworth Infirmary. George Lansell had been a gardener in England. He planted much of the English ivy that adorns many campus buildings as well as the flowering crab trees that grace the lower campus. A talented photographer, George Lansell took numerous photographs of the Norwich campus. He hand-colored his photographs with oil paint for a beautiful effect and frequently sold them to cadets. According to Lansell’s daughter, George often commented that he put his son and daughter through college with the money he made from hand-tinting photographs.  The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on George Arthur Lansell.

About the Collection

This collection consists of contact sheets and corresponding negatives of the Norwich University campus, primarily from 1925 to the 1950s, although there may be some images dating from mid-1960s when George Lansell retired. Parades, buildings and other structures are among Lansell’s most frequent subjects. His photographs document the tremendous changes undergone by the Norwich campus over a period of more than 30 years.

Adam Lazinsk of Colchester, CT, graduated with the Norwich University class of 1987. While at Norwich, he was a member of Band Company and of the Regimental Chorus.

About the Collection

Included in the collection are papers and ephemera related to Adam Lazinsk’s time as a student at Norwich, 1984-1987. Materials include schedules, a pass, ring information and ceremony program, a merit slip, a photograph of the Grenadiers, orders, and programs. Also included is a collection of choral music and an audiotape, 1985-1986, containing music by the Norwich University Regimental Band, Regimental Chorus and the Grenadiers. Oscar Eugene Learnard Papers, 1850-1932 (1 Box)

Oscar Eugene Learnard, class of 1854 About Oscar E. Learnard

Oscar Learnard was born in Fairfax, VT. He attended Bakersfield Academy and entered Norwich University in 1852. He left Norwich in 1854. Next, Learnard attended Albany Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1855. He spent the summer of 1855 in Ohio and in the fall went to Lawrence, KS, where he took an active part in the Free State Cavalry. Later, he was instrumental in the founding of the town of Burlington, KS, which was named after Burlington, VT. He also served as a member of the Free State Territorial Legislature in 1857. During the Civil War, Learnard was commissioned Lt. Colonel of the 1st Kansas Volunteer Cavalry. He married Mary Sophia Eldridge in 1862 and resigned from the army in 1863. About the Collection

The collection contains papers, ephemera and photographs compiled in scrapbook format by Learnard’s son, Tracy. Topics of interest include the Lawrence (KS) Raid in 1856, the Battle of Bull Creek in 1856, Quantrill’s Raid in 1863, the 1st Free State Territorial (KS) Legislature, John Brown’s career in Kansas and miscellaneous materials on Bakersfield Academy and Norwich University. Nelson F. Leclair Scrapbook, 1918-1922 (1 Volume)

Nelson Francis “Joe” Leclair (1900-1992) of Chicopee, MA, pursued a civil engineering course while at Norwich University. He entered Norwich in the fall of 1918 as an S.A.T.C. (Student Army Training Corps) student. He was a member of the radio club, the American Legion and the Skull and Swords. He served on the junior week entertainment committee and was involved in the junior week horse show. Leclair was a member of the Delta Sigma Tau fraternity. He married Dorathea Anderson in 1934. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Nelson Leclair.

About the Collection

The collection consists of Nelson F. Leclair’s Norwich University scrapbook or “memory book.” Topics of interest within the scrapbook include athletics, Armistice celebrations in Northfield, Norwich centennial celebrations, S.A.T.C. documents, photographic portraits and an article about a bet Leclair made with fellow cadet, Lloyd Squier, that Squier could not go without food for a week. The collection also includes an autobiographical booklet by Dorathea “Thea” Leclair.

William S. Lee Papers, 1939-1982 (2 Boxes)

About William S. Lee

Sergeant William S. Lee was a long-time aide to General Isaac D. White and a twenty-year veteran of the U.S. Army, 1941-1961. Lee began his service as an enlisted aide to General I.D. White in January 1946 and remained on White’s enlisted staff until March 1961, when he retired at the same time as General White. William Lee continued to work for General White after his retirement. He graduated from San Mateo High School in California in 1939.

About the Collection

The collection consists primarily of photograph albums documenting Sergeant William Lee’s time in military service under General I.D. White, 1946-1961. Additional information on the collection will be found below in the content listing.

Glen Fraser Leet Papers, 1926-1980 (2 Boxes)

Glen Fraser Leet, class of 1930, in fencing gear About Glen F. Leet

Originally from Brockton, MA, Glen Fraser Leet graduated with the Norwich University class of 1930. He was a member of Iota Pi Kappa fraternity. Leet was involved in fencing, polo, boxing and football. He served on the staff of the War Whoop and was a member of the debating team. Leet was a self-titled “humanist,” traveling to 72 countries to assist people with raising the quality of living and to make a lasting contribution to social and economic progress. He traveled to Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and throughout North and South America. Glen Leet was married to Mildred Robbins. Glen Leet was born in 1908 and died in 1998. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Glen Fraser Leet and Mildred Robbins Leet.

About the Collection

The collection contains seven volumes of Glen Leet’s writings, 1926-1980. The focus of most of the writings is on the community development philosophy of Glen and Mildred Leet as well as specific programs with which the Leets were involved. Published and unpublished materials as well as documents written by other authors are included. The earliest writings date from Leet’s time as a student at Norwich University and include a brief account of his experiences during the flood of 1927. Later writings reflect Leet’s involvement and experiences with humanitarian programs, beginning in the mid 1940s when he was director of welfare for the UNRRA in Greece. The writings are organized chronologically: Volume 1: 1926-1950 (also includes annotated bibliography and an introduction that provides details on the lives and philosophy of Glen and Mildred Leet); Volume 2: 1951-1960; Volume 3: 1961-1967; Volume 4: 1968-1971; Volume 5: 1972-1976; Volume 6: 1977-1978; and Volume 7: 1979-1980.
