James Ashton Hall Papers, 1838-1875 (1 Box)

James A. Hall of Reading, VT, graduated from Norwich University with the class of 1839. He  later also received an honorary A.M. degree from Norwich in 1842. Following his graduation in 1839, he taught school at South Strafford, VT, and later served as principal of the Unity Scientific and Military Academy in Unity, NH. Hall studied law in Cavendish, VT, and was admitted to the bar in 1843 but never practiced his profession. He practiced land surveying and died in 1845, at age 28. The control file contains additional biographical information on James A. Hall.

About the Collection

The collection consists of writings, speeches and correspondence of the family of James Ashton Hall. The earliest letters (5 items) were written in 1838, when James Hall was a student at Norwich University. They describe his studies, classes and lectures, accommodations, various buildings, regulations, food, and travel in detail while also providing commentary on the school and its uniform. Other letters were written while Hall was teaching in South Strafford (2 items) or while he was principal of the Unity Scientific and Military Academy in Unity, NH (9 items). In these letters, Hall describes his students and their coursework as well as the area, travel, mail service, and local events and lectures. An additional nine letters are written to James Hall by friends and relatives. Other letters and miscellaneous papers (10 items) offer insight into Hall’s family and their relationships. Penmanship notebooks of Hall’s sisters Mary E. and Sally are included. The collection also contains both the address Hall gave at Norwich commencement ceremonies in 1843 and other addresses and essays, including an address to the Proctorsville Lyceum, December 1840.

Barksdale Hamlett Records, 1950-1975 (10 Boxes)

Barksdale Hamlett, President of Norwich University, 1965-1972 About Barksdale Hamlett, President of Norwich University, 1965-1972

Barksdale Hamlett was born in Kentucky. He entered the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY, in 1926 and served in the African and European theaters during World War II as well as in Korea. Hamlett earned the Distinguished Service medal, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, and the Bronze Star. His final assignment prior to his retirement in 1964, after more than thirty-eight years of service, was as Army Vice-Chief of Staff. He served as president of Norwich University from 1965 to 1972. Hamlett married Frances Underwood and the couple had one daughter. Additional biographical information on Barksdale Hamlett can be found in the control file with the collection.

About the Collection

The collection consists primarily of the files created and accrued by Barskdale Hamlett during his tenure as president of Norwich University, 1965-1972. An alphabetical content listing of files can be found below. Several files pertain to planning for sesquicentennial celebrations. Some of the materials in the collection date back to the presidential tenure of Ernest N. Harmon.

Clarence A. Hamlin Scrapbook, 1915-1919 (1 Volume)

Clarence A. Hamlin, class of 1919 About Clarence A. Hamlin

Clarence Hamlin (1896-1953) of Nashua, NH, pursued a course in civil engineering while at Norwich University. He was a member of the band as well as the glee and mandolin clubs. Hamlin also served as a trumpeter and bugler and as class treasurer. He was a manager of the football team and a member of the Phi Kappa Delta fraternity. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Clarence A. Hamlin.

About the Collection

The collection consists of Clarence A. Hamlin’s Norwich University scrapbook or “memory book.” Topics of interest within the scrapbook include musical clubs, football, the suspension of the sophomore class following a hazing incident, and the Plattsburgh, NY, junior military training camp in 1918.

John Hancock, Jr., was from Boston, MA, and attended the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy (forerunner to Norwich University) from 1822 to 1825. Very little is known about the life or family of John Hancock, Jr.

About the Collection

The collection includes the journal of John Hancock, Jr., 1 January-3 July 1824. In daily entries, Hancock’s journal documents the life of a cadet in the early years of Norwich. He reports on his fellow students, the physical environment both at the Academy and in the village of Norwich, VT, discipline issues, Captain Alden Partridge and his extraordinary pedestrian excursions and teaching methodology, as well as other staff of the Academy. A typed transcription is available with the collection.

About the collection

This file is part of a record series of biographical files of alumni, faculty and staff created and/or accrued by various individuals including alumni affairs and development staff members, archives staff and former university historian, William Arba Ellis. Robert E. Haney was a member of the Norwich University class of 1945. During World War II, he served with the 379th Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. After the war, he returned to Norwich to finish his degree. This file contains additional information about Robert Haney’s WWII experiences, including a survey he completed for the Sullivan Museum and History Center in preparation for their The Role of Remembrance: Norwich University and WWII exhibit, which ran from October 2010 to January 2011.

William Giles Harding Letters, 1827-1844 (1 File)

William Harding from Davidson county, Tennessee entered the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy (forerunner of Norwich University) in 1824 and graduated in 1828. After his graduation, he returned to his farm in Tennessee and raised thoroughbred racehorses. Harding was versed in the law, medicine and engineering. A Confederate sympathizer, William Harding raised and equipped a battery of artillery and ran a factory to manufacture percussion caps for the Confederate army. In 1829, he married Mary Selene McNairy (d. 1839). He was married a second time in 1840 to Elizabeth Irwin McGavock (d. 1867). The control file included with the collections contains additional biographical information on William Giles Harding.

About the Collection

The collection consists of photocopies or typescript transcriptions of letters, 1827-1844. Most of the letters are written to William Harding by classmates and friends from the Academy between 1827 and 1830. A copy of one letter to Harding from Alden Partridge in 1844 is also included. Many of the original letters are held by the Southern Historical Collection, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The George Caraway letter belongs to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. The content listing below provides additional detail on the letters within the collection.

Ernest Nason Harmon Records, 1912-1992 (21 Boxes)

Ernest N. Harmon, President of Norwich University, 1950-1965 About Ernest N. Harmon, President of Norwich University, 1950-1965

Ernest Harmon was a graduate of Bradford (VT) Academy. He attended Norwich University for one year before being appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, from which he graduated in 1917. His military career spanned two world wars. As a young lieutenant, he commanded F Troop, 2nd Cavalry, A.E.F., in World War I. He commanded the 2nd Armored Division, “Hell on Wheels,” in Africa and France, and the 1st Armored Division in Italy during World War II. After the war, Harmon organized and commanded the U.S. Constabulary, the function of which was to restore law and order to war-torn Germany. Upon his retirement from the army, Ernest Harmon began a new career as president of Norwich University, 1950-1965, during the period of its greatest expansion. Please see the biographical files in Box 2 and the files of articles about E.N. Harmon in Box 18 for further biographical information.

About the Collection

This collection consists primarily of files created and accrued by Ernest Harmon during his tenure as president of Norwich University, 1950-1965. Photographs, photograph albums and scrapbooks (Boxes 19-21) document some of his wartime experiences, 1942-1948. Memoirs, certificates, commissions, and biographical articles are the only other records in the collection that are related to General Harmon’s military career. Both Harmon’s activities as university president and his interactions with the university community, including faculty/staff, alumni, various departments, and the board of trustees, are documented in the collection.  An alphabetical content listing of files can be found below.

Edward Kelleran Harris Papers, 1852-1859 (3 files)

About Edward Kelleran Harris

Edward K. Harris of Boston, MA, was a non-graduating member of the Class of 1855.  He attended Norwich University from 1851 or 1852 until 1854, when he left to pursue a mercantile career in New Orleans, LA. While at Norwich, Edward Harris was a member of the newly formed Friendship Club, the precursor to what we know today as the Norwich University Alumni Association.

About the Collection

The collection consists of letters written by family and friends to Edward K. Harris both during his time as a student at Norwich University, 1852-1853, and while he was working for the mercantile firm of Tufts and Hobart in New Orleans, 1855-1859. Correspondents include Hartley Sewall, Washington Vermilye, C.H. Simpson, J. Whitney Austin, Joe Hurd, and his brother, James Harris among others. Also included are two grade and conduct report cards  for Edward Harris dated 1851-1852 and 1853 and signed by NU President Edward Bourns.
