About the Collection

This collection consists of past iterations of faculty manuals for Norwich University and Vermont College. The manuals date from 1961 to 1998. Also filed with these manuals are handbooks for other personnel, 1992-1998. Current versions of faculty and personnel manuals can be found online here as can recent versions of other policy manuals. This collection is open to accessions and new editions are added on an ongoing basis.

About the Faculty Senate

The faculty senate of Norwich University is the sole governance body of the faculty. Its purview includes, but is not limited to curriculum, academic standards, policies and procedures and any other matters that affect institutional decision making, goal setting and resource allocation.

About the Collection

The collection includes records of the faculty senate, 1989-2001, as well as those of the faculty council, 1981-1993. Also included are older records, 1893-1987, that reflect earlier activities related to faculty governance. A content listing of files in the collection can be found below.

Leston P. Faneuf Scrapbook, 1922-1926 (1 Volume)

About Leston P. Faneuf

Leston Faneuf of Lebanon, NH, participated in wrestling, football and baseball during his time as a student at Norwich University. He served on the winter carnival and junior week committees. Faneuf was also a member of the N club and served on the board of the Guidon. He was a member of the Delta Sigma Tau fraternity. Leston Faneuf died in 1973. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Leston P. Faneuf.

The collection consists of Leston P. Faneuf’s Norwich University scrapbook or “memory book.” Topics of interest within the scrapbook include football, baseball and winter carnival.

About the collection

This file is part of a record series of biographical files of alumni, faculty and staff created and/or accrued by various individuals including alumni affairs and development staff members, archives staff and former university historian, William Arba Ellis. Frank B. Fenton attended Norwich University as a member of the class of 1857, although he did not graduate with his class. He moved from Bennington, Vermont, to Peoria, Illinois, around 1860. He served with the Illinois Volunteer Artillery during the Civil War and worked in Chicago and Denver after the war. This file consists of additional information on Frank B. Fenton, primarily in the form of correspondence from William Arba Ellis to Fenton’s family and others. George C. Randall, class of 1904, also helped Ellis locate information on Fenton, which can be found in Randall’s biographical file.

This collection consists of financial statements and annual financial reports prepared for Norwich University by previous treasurers and auditors between 1899 and 2009.  Also included with these reports is information about fees and financial policies from 1975 to 2006.  This collection is open to new accessions and reports are added on an ongoing basis.

John Roderick Finn Papers, 1943-2007 (1 Box)

John Roderick Finn, class of 1946 About John R. Finn

John R. Finn was born in St. Albans, VT. His education at Norwich University was interrupted by World War II. He served in the 8th Armored Division of the U. S. Army in the European Theater, where he was awarded the Purple Heart after receiving a hand wound. After the war, John Finn returned to Norwich University and graduated with the Class of 1946 with a BA degree in English. He succeeded his father as sheriff of Franklin County, VT, serving in that position for twelve years. Finn was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives and later, in 1984, as Senator of Franklin County. He died in 2007, leaving his wife, Betty, and a son, Michael.

About the Collection

The collection contains John R. Finn’s World War II letters, 23 August 1943-20 August 1945 (4 files), as well as several service medal certificates, 2005. Also included with the collection are biographical clippings and tributes, 1988-2007, relating to his service to Franklin County and to Vermont, as well as information about his funeral on 25 August 2007, photographs, and many certificates and letters of appreciation, 1981-2006. Scanned copies of John Finn’s World War II letters, as well as a CD-ROM containing scanned images of the letters, are available with the collection.

About George B. Fisher

George B. Fisher served in Company C, 25th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War. Fisher’s grandson, Brayton D. Fisher, graduated from Norwich University with the class of 1928.

About the Collection

The collection contains papers, a photograph, and a published New Testament, all pertaining to the Civil War service of George B. Fisher and that of his unit, the 25th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Additional information on the collection can be found in the content listing below.

Harry Clarke Fisher, class of 1914 About Harry C. Fisher

Harry Fisher (1889-1953) of Barre, VT, pursued a course in chemistry while at Norwich University. He was a member of both the glee and the mandolin clubs. He played football and was a member of Phi Kappa Delta. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Harry C. Fisher.

The collection consists of Harry C. Fisher’s Norwich University scrapbooks or “memory books” of Norwich memorabilia and photographs. Topics of interest within the scrapbooks include the small pox camp of 1912, fraternity events, baseball and baseball field construction.

Fledgling, 1943-1944 (1 File)

About the Collection

The Fledgling was a publication produced by students in the 56th College Training Detachment, Norwich University, Army Air Force in 1943 and 1944.  The first issue was printed on 7 May 1943 and publication continued until Air Crew training at Norwich ceased in 1944.  The Fledgling ncluded both training detachment, campus, aviation and World War II news.  As a NU newspaper, it documented activities on the Norwich campus, during a time period in WWII that is not covered by issues of the official student newspaper, the Guidon.
