About John R. Finn
John R. Finn was born in St. Albans, VT. His education at Norwich University was interrupted by World War II. He served in the 8th Armored Division of the U. S. Army in the European Theater, where he was awarded the Purple Heart after receiving a hand wound. After the war, John Finn returned to Norwich University and graduated with the Class of 1946 with a BA degree in English. He succeeded his father as sheriff of Franklin County, VT, serving in that position for twelve years. Finn was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives and later, in 1984, as Senator of Franklin County. He died in 2007, leaving his wife, Betty, and a son, Michael.
About the Collection
The collection contains John R. Finn’s World War II letters, 23 August 1943-20 August 1945 (4 files), as well as several service medal certificates, 2005. Also included with the collection are biographical clippings and tributes, 1988-2007, relating to his service to Franklin County and to Vermont, as well as information about his funeral on 25 August 2007, photographs, and many certificates and letters of appreciation, 1981-2006. Scanned copies of John Finn’s World War II letters, as well as a CD-ROM containing scanned images of the letters, are available with the collection.
