Bailey was a member of the Norwich University class of 1863. During the Civil War, he served as a drillmaster for the state of Vermont and enrolled in the “College Cavaliers,” which became Company B, 7th Squadron, Rhode Island Volunteer Cavalry. This file contains more biographical information on George Bailey, primarily in the form of William Arba Ellis’ notes and correspondence.

Perley Dustin Baker Papers, 1920-1983 (3 Boxes)

Perley Dustin Baker, professor of chemistry About Perley D. Baker

Perley D. Baker graduated with the Norwich University class of 1920. He was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He served in the Army’s gas division from 1918-1919, in the Army Reserve until called to active duty in 1942, and from 1942-1946, in the American and European theaters. Baker joined the faculty of the Norwich University chemistry department in 1920, becoming department head in 1946. He also served as university dean from 1950-1957. Baker retired in 1962. He married Lillian May Lloyd (d. 1977) in 1918. The control and biographical files included with the collection contain additional information on the life and career Perley Dustin Baker.

About the Collection

The collection contains papers, photographs and other materials documenting Perley Baker’s time as a student at Norwich as well as the various positions he held later as a member of the Norwich University faculty, particularly as both a student and teacher of chemistry. Karl Ferguson Baldwin Papers, 1926-1945 (1 Box)

Karl Baldwin, class of 1908 About Karl F. Baldwin

Karl Baldwin, originally from Ohio, graduated with the Norwich University class of 1908. He served as editor on the staffs of the War Whoop and the Reveille. Baldwin was captain of Company C and served as president of the class of 1908. Following his graduation, he served in the U. S. Army for 39 years, including overseas assignments in Corregidor, Tokyo and Australia. During 1941-1942, Baldwin commanded the Sixth Coast Artillery, headquartered in San Francisco. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was presented with the Sacred Treasurer-Third Order award by Japan, where he served at the American Embassy. Baldwin also served as U. S. Military Attaché in Australia. He later served as professor of military science and tactics at the University of Kansas. The control file with the collection contains additional biographical information on Karl Baldwin.

About the Collection

The collection consists of eighteen speeches and lectures written and presented by Karl Baldwin on various occasions from 1926-1945. A detailed content listing may be found below. Also included in the collection is a copy of Pillars: New Philippines Cultural Institute Souvenir Book 1943, published in scrapbook format (Tagaytay, Cavite: New Philippines Cultural Institute, 1943).

George Williamson Balloch Papers, 1845-1902 (1 Box)

George Williamson Balloch, class of 1847 About George W. Balloch

George Balloch (1825-1907) was born in Claremont, NH. During the Civil War, he served with the Fifth New Hampshire Volunteers Infantry Regiment, which was assigned to General Oliver Otis Howard’s brigade, thus beginning a connection with General Howard that would last throughout and beyond the Civil War. Balloch served as commissary of subsistence under O. O. Howard for most of the war. Following the war, George W. Balloch served as chief disbursing officer of the newly-created Freedmen’s Bureau until 1871. Later, he worked in both the banking and insurance businesses. He married Martha Jane Palmer (d. 1900) in 1849 and the couple had eight children. The collection contains additional biographical information on the life and career of George Williamson Balloch.

About the Collection

The collection is rich in biographical detail about the life and military service of George W. Balloch. There is a notebook kept by Balloch as a student at Norwich University, 1845-1847, including essays and poetry, some of which is original and some of which was copied by Balloch from various published sources. This notebook is more compositional than autobiographical. Also included in the collection are three items of correspondence dated 1865 and 1868. Balloch’s lecture, “How an Army is Fed,” delivered to the Soldier’s Union of the First Congregational Church, Washington, DC, on 21 October 1898, along with a draft of the same, is also included, as is his tribute to President Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901), “General Harrison as a Soldier,” delivered to the same organization on 18 March 1901. There are three variant autobiographical sketches written by George Balloch in July of 1902 as well as his memoirs, which include another autobiographical account of his life from his birth in 1825 to the Battle of Seven Pines in 1862. The latter memoirs were written after 1900 and consist of a single manuscript volume and typed transcription.

About the collection

This file is part of a record series of biographical files of alumni, faculty and staff created and/or accrued by various individuals including alumni affairs and development staff members, archives staff and former university historian, William Arba Ellis. Paul Olin Bancroft was a member of the Norwich University class of 1944. During World War II, he served in the Airborne Infantry, 17th Airborne Division, 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment. After the war, he returned to Norwich to finish his degree, graduating in 1947. This file consists of a survey about alumni WWII experiences completed by Paul Bancroft in 2010. This survey was conducted by the Sullivan Museum and History Center in preparation for their The Role of Remembrance: Norwich University and WWII exhibit, which ran from October 2010 to January 2011.

Charles Barber, Treasurer About Charles Newell Barber

Charles Barber graduated with the Norwich University class of 1908. Following his graduation, he served as a member of the faculty in the physics department until 1934 when he was appointed treasurer and superintendent of buildings and grounds. As treasurer, Barber also served as secretary to the board of trustees. Charles Barber served both in World War I and as U.S. property and disbursing officer for seventeen years. He was also director of the selective service in Vermont during World War II. He retired from Norwich University in 1952. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Charles Barber.

William Henry Barrington Papers, 1921-1965 (1 Box)

Originally from Greensboro, VT, William Barrington was an outstanding varsity track athlete, capturing first place in the mile and half-mile in the 1924 Vermont state championship and earning first in the mile and second in the half-mile in the 1924 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association meet. He captained the 1925 Norwich University track team and served as a captain in the corps of cadets as well. For many years, he served in the Vermont and, later, Massachusetts State Guard. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II and served in the Reserves until 1957. During the war, Barrington primarily served in training and technical service functions in the United States. Following the war, he held a variety of management positions in the automotive business before retiring as general manager of Carparts Inc. of Springfield, MA. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Holyoke, MA. He married Mary Henderson and the couple had two sons, David Barrington (class of 1959) and Donald Barrington (class of 1965), both of whom attended Norwich University. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on William Barrington.

About the Collection

The collection consists of 9 files of photographs, 1921-1925 and 1955-1965, most of which pertain to Norwich University parades and formations, rook week and student life during William, David, and Donald Barrington’s tenures at Norwich. There are also a limited number of oversize photographs, including one panoramic group portrait of the NU Corps of Cadets in 1924. Additionally, photographs documenting William Barrington’s post-Norwich military career, including two rolled, panoramic group photographs, are included in the collection. There are also papers, 1921-1925, 1933, 1940-1948, and 1951-1957, the majority of which pertain to Barrington’s post-Norwich military career during World War II (in the United States) and in the Reserves. Both the 68th Army Air Force Training Detachment at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME, and William Barrington’s time at Officer Training School is well represented in Barrington’s papers from 1942 to 1944.  Personal notebooks and training manuals from the early 1940s are included as well as ephemera and diagrams and drawings (OSD2.2), possibly related to geometry, completed during his time as a Norwich student.

This file is part of a record series of biographical files of alumni, faculty and staff created and/or accrued by various individuals including alumni affairs and development staff members, archives staff and former university historian, William Arba Ellis. Neal Webb Beattie was a member of the Norwich University class of 1911 from Maidstone, Vermont. While at Norwich, he pursued an electrical engineering degree and served as class secretary in 1911. Although William Arba Ellis recorded Neal Beattie’s birth date as 20 September 1887, the Social Security Death Index indicates he was born in 1885. Neal Beattie died on 7 September 1973. The file consists primarily of Ellis’ drafts of a biographical sketch of Beattie.

David Belanger of Whately, MA, was an electrical engineering major and graduated with the Norwich University class of 1960. While at Norwich, he was a member of the outing and Newman clubs as well as the mountain rescue team. He also served on the class honor, corps honor,  and junior week committees. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and helped to pioneer the formative period of mountain and cold weather training. David Belanger was proficient in skiing and mountain climbing.

About the Collection

The collection centers around an accident on Cannon Mountain (NH) in August 1959, during which David Belanger was instrumental in the recovery of the bodies of two unfortunate mountain climbers who died from over-exposure on the mountain. The accident and recovery efforts are documented by news clippings, papers and publications.
