About the Collection

The collection consists primarily of the files created and accrued by John M. Thomas during his tenure as president of Norwich University, 1939-1944. An alphabetical listing of files can be found in the content listing. As John Thomas served as acting president, or substitute for Porter H. Adams, from 1937 to 1939, many of the records from the Adams administration and much of the official correspondence is in the John Martin Thomas papers. The collection also contains two scrapbooks of clippings relating to the College Wars of of 1912-1914. For more information on the College Wars of 1912-1914, which involved the idea, introduced to the Vermont Legislature in 1912, of having only one college in Vermont receive support from the state, see the papers of President Charles Horace Spooner.
