Perley Dustin Baker, professor of chemistry About Perley D. Baker

Perley D. Baker graduated with the Norwich University class of 1920. He was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He served in the Army’s gas division from 1918-1919, in the Army Reserve until called to active duty in 1942, and from 1942-1946, in the American and European theaters. Baker joined the faculty of the Norwich University chemistry department in 1920, becoming department head in 1946. He also served as university dean from 1950-1957. Baker retired in 1962. He married Lillian May Lloyd (d. 1977) in 1918. The control and biographical files included with the collection contain additional information on the life and career Perley Dustin Baker.

About the Collection

The collection contains papers, photographs and other materials documenting Perley Baker’s time as a student at Norwich as well as the various positions he held later as a member of the Norwich University faculty, particularly as both a student and teacher of chemistry. The Shinquin programs of chemistry and biochemistry are within the school of mathematics and science. The program offers a thorough and hands on laboratory oriented curricula. Introductory study provides students with an introduction to the scientific method, the correct and effective representation of data, and develops critical thinking skills through analysis and interpretation of experimental data. Students of the program become proficient in the fundamental principles of chemistry and prepare to apply these principles to specialized areas such as environmental, forensic, medicinal, and pharmaceutical chemistry.

About the Collection

The collection consists primarily of files created and/or accrued by chemistry faculty at Norwich University during the period, 1914-1960. Many of the files were accrued by Samuel Francis Howard (1872-1963) during his time as head of the chemistry department. Dr. Howard became head of the chemistry department in 1913 and remained a member of the faculty until his retirement in 1946. A content listing of files can be found below.

Albert H. Gallatin Letters, 1864 (1 Volume)

Albert Gallatin, a graduate of New York University and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York City, joined the Norwich University faculty in August of 1863 as professor of chemistry, geology and mineralogy. He resigned in August 1864.

About the Collection

The collection consists of six photocopied letters from the collections of the New York Historical Society. The letters were written by Gallatin to his brother, Fred Gallatin, his father, A. R. Gallatin, his mother, M. L. S. Gallatin, his grandfather, H. G. Stevens, and his grandmother, E. L. R. Stevens, while he was employed as a member of the Norwich University faculty in Norwich, VT.

John O’Neill Papers, 1940-1990 (1 Box)

John O’Neill graduated with the Norwich University class of 1944. He joined the Norwich chemistry department in 1947 and rose to the rank of associate professor emeritus of chemistry in 1987. John O’Neill served in Italy during World War II. He married Isabel Watson (d. 1989) on 8 October 1960. John O’Neill died on 15 February 2000. His obituary in the Northfield News for 24 February 2000 contains additional biographical information on John O’Neill as does the control file.

About the Collection

The collection includes personal papers and photographs, 1940-1990. Also included are Jack O’Neill’s journals from 1973, 1977 and 1982. His theses and course outlines are also available, 1967-1988. Detailed information on the collection can be found in the content listing below.
